Square 1-4는 공간과 인간의 소통, 소리의 생성과 이미지, 공간의 관계에 대하여 실험하는 미디어 설치 퍼포먼스 작업으로, 작업의 모티브는 공간의 기본 단위인 ‘평’ (1.8m*1.8m) 단위 개념에서부터 왔다. 

4개의 스퀘어는 그 자체로 설치 작품이면서도 퍼포먼스 악기로서의 개념과 연결되어 있는데, 각각의 스퀘어에 4채널 사운드가 연결되어 있다. 

작가가 구조물 사이의 ‘소리판’에 앉아서 소리를 발생, 변형시키면 빛 이미지는 소리에 반응한다. 

실시간(realtime)으로 변하는 소리와 이미지들은 4개의 구조물에 투사되고, 구조물의 공간감에 영향을 주며 공간이 합쳐지거나 나누어진다. 그래서 4개의 스퀘어는 변화하는 이미지와 소리에 따라 각각의 개체로 존재하거나 하나의 형태로 인지되고, 관객은 한 평의 공간에 서서 작가가 만들어 낸 공간을 경험하게 된다.

Sung-Hyun CHO proposes an immersive and interactive experience potential energy symbolized by the heartbeat of the participants materializes through sound and light. At the beginning of the experiment, each participant will have a different heart rate. With a mixer, the artist will control the signal strength and gradually the perception (audible and visible) of this energy enables synchronization of all energy in the room, like a ritual experience.

Secondly, Yohan HAN, will explore another dimension of a banal and intimate gesture, sound collaboration with Sung-Hyun CHO to represent the annihilation and reincarnation of latent energy that exists in the body through one of the four primary components: the heat. (Duration of the two performances without interruption about 25 minutes).

이번에는 기존 퍼포먼스 작업을 보다 의식(Ritual) 적으로 접근하였습니다. 보이지 않는 에너지에 관한 작업으로 파리에 위치한 (Espace des Arts Sans Frontières) 에서 작품을 발표합니다. 작품은 2013년 성곡미술관과 문화역 서울 284(RTO) 등에서 함께 작업해온 HAN, Yohan과 함께 합니다. HAN, Yohan의 몸의 언어와 CHO, Sunghyun의 소리와 빛의 언어를 통해 보이지 않는 에너지를 체험할 것입니다.

[Performance] Energie latente

(Energy latent), the media ritual will be started at Espace des arts in 16th of October.

On opening night at 19:30 there will be a performance artist with director Sung Hyun CHO, and performance artist Yohan HAN: ENERGY LATENT

'MEDIA FUTURE SHOCK!'은 현재 플래툰 아티스트 랩에 입주하고 있는 미디어 아티스트, 조성현이 기획한 이벤트이다. 이번 이벤트는 예술 장르 의 경계를 허물며, 사운드와 영상을 아우르는 미디어의 현재와 미래에 대 한 제안이자, 실험이다.
조성현 작가는 건축을 기반으로 미디어 아트와 사운드의 경계를 넘나들 며 자신의 예술영역을 확장시켜 왔다. 그러하기에 그가 이번에 기획한 MEDIA FUTURE SHOCK!은 보편적인 협업의 영역을 넘어, 한 장르에 구 속되지 않고, 건축, 미디어 아트, 사운드를 하나의 예술 분야록 구축한다. 그리고 그와 동시에 다양한 형태로 확산하는 계기가 될 것이다.
이에 걸맞게 건축가, 미디어 아티스트, 사운드 아티스트, 실험영화 감독, 비디오 아티스트, 뮤지션, DJ와 VJ등, 여러 분야의 아티스트들이 참여하 였다. 이들은 자신들과 같이 다양한 분야로 영역을 확장시켜가고 있는 작 가들과 소통을 하고, 그의 결과로 MEDIA의 미래(FUTURE)에 대한 관객 들의 상상은 충격(SHOCK)과 함께 현실이 될 것이다. 

'MEDIA FUTURE SHOCK!' is an event designed by SUNGHYUN CHO, a resident artist of PLATOON artist labs. it demolishes boundaries between different genres of art, and experiments with sound and visual suggesting figures of the future.

MEDIA FUTURE SHOCK! is not a common collaboration between different fields of art because of SUNGHYUN's background in several art fields. it does not limit itself in one field of art, but combines architecture, media art, and sound, and creates new and various form of art as well.

artists from various fields are involved in this event. architect, media artist, sound artis, experimental film director, musician, DJ, and VJ. they are all gathered at MEDIA FUTURE SHOCK! to expand their field of art through communication between them. from their work, your imagination of the FUTURE of the MEDIA will become true in front of your eyes with a SHOCK.

누가 누구냐! Who is who!

Who is who?

WHO is WHO는 Reverse graffiti를 이용하여 평창 비엔날레의 주제 '지구 하모니'의 키워드 중 하나인 환경을 이용하여 접근한 작업이다. 나는 우선적으로 자연을 회손 시키지 않는 방법으로 평창 비엔날레의 홍보 방법에 대하여 생각하였으며 퍼포먼스와 광고물의 두가지를 통합 시켜 작품을 진행하였다. Reverse graffiti는 일반적인 그래피티와 같이 바닥, 혹은 벽에 자신이 원하는 것을 새기는 작업이지만, 물을 이용하여 바닥의 때를 벗겨 냄으로서 기존의 덧칠 하는 방법과는 반대의 작업으로 진행된다. Reverse Graffiti는 환경 친화적이다 그렇기 때문에 Green graffiti라고도 알려져 있다.

[Performance] 'Sonic trace' at Sunggok museum

Sonic Trace는 인간 신체의 존재하는 흔적을 빛, 영상, 사운드, 공간을 통해 이야기하는 미디어 사운드 퍼포먼스이다. 이 작품은 크게 3장으로 구성되어있으며 음악의 발생적 구성형태를 가지고 있으며 시각, 청각의 관계를 공간과 시간을 통하여 연결 한다.  

1장은 ‘나아가는 자’가 행위로서 공간을 시각적 형태로 해석하며 자신의 인생을 이야기한다. 2장은 ‘찾아가는 자’가 사운드 랜턴을 이용하여 흔적을 찾아간다. 3장은 ‘나아가는 자’와 ‘찾아가는 자’가 만난다.

음악적 구성으로 보았을때 나아가는 자는 작곡가이며 흔적은 소리의 악보이다. 찾아가는 자는 연주자이며 흔적을 들으며 연주를 한다. 

나아가는 자는 시각을 통해 공간을 보여준다. 몸짓과 바닥에 그려지는 흔적은 나아가는 자의 자아이며 인생이다. 아무 소리도 없이 행위와 움직임으로 흔적을 만들어 나간다. 찾아가는 자는 눈을 가리고 인체의 청각만을 이용하여 공간을 해석한다. 바닥에 그려진 흔적은 숨쉬기를 통하여 빛을 통해 인지되며 이것은 다시 소리로 해석되어 들려진다. 나아가는 자의 시각과 찾아가는 자의 청각은 '사운드 랜턴'을 통해 연결되며 해석 되어진다.

'Sonic trace' explores the existential traces of the human body as it connects to the space through a light, video, and stereo sound performance. This performance involves two performers: a dancer and a tracer. The dancer moves mysteriously across the silent stage leaving behind her a trace of ink, which serves as a musical score for the tracer to follow. The tracer, who will be blindfolded, is to follow the ink left behind by the dancer through the aid of a sound signal generated by an apparatus that he uses. The piece ends with the tracer finally finding the dancer. This performance requires one major interface used by the tracer. This interface connects a "sound lantern"  The "sound lantern" can only detect the dancer's ink when the light is generated from the breathing mask. Also, the "sound lantern" is connected to a projector and a laptop running a direction-sensitive panning algorithm to aid the blind tracer.

이 작업은 들려오는 다른 사람들의 심장 박동과 빛에 의해 변화하는 관객 자신의 심장 박동등 몸의 변화를 감지하는 작품이다. 작품은 관객이 참여하는 방법으로 진행자는 객석으로 다가가 관객 4명을 선별하여 무대로 나온다. 참가자는 진행자의 도움으로 가슴에 청진기를 장착하고 형광등 앞에 선다. 참가자는 스피커를 통해 자신의 심장 박동이 공연장에서 들리는 것과 이에 따라 반응 하는 빛을 확인할 것이며 이것은 4명의 참자가 까지 차례로 진행 된다. 잠시후, 4명의 심장박동이 크게 들릴 것이며 시간 경과후 심장박동은 일정한 규칙을 가지고 리듬을 만든다. 관객의 심장박동은 참가자의 심장박동 소리를 따라 변하며 비슷한 리듬을 가지게 될 것이다. 이로서 관객은 자신의 심박이 변화하는 것을 느끼며 외적 환경과 어떤 관계를 가지며 영향 받고 있는지 인식 할 것이다.
